Hard Cover book Has a small tear & a water stain on the protecting cover (see photos) Description of Book: The son of a Stepney lorry driver, Terence Donovan (1936-96) personified what popular imagination held to be the essence of the 'Swinging Sixties'. His photography, iconoclastic and irreverent, brought to magazines and advertising a new visual language of gesture and stance, a working class chic' with its roots firmly in the world he knew best - the streets of London's East End. He revolutionised a genre almost single-handedly: his men's fashion photographs taken in a gritty, noir-ish style, closer to reportage than fashion photography, marked out the parameters for the depiction of men's clothing thereafter. 'Not so long ago', he said in 1964, the only way you photographed men's fashion was on a shooting stick in Regents Park... He took his models into the bomb-ravaged wastegrounds of postwar London or balanced them on the girders of steelworks and iron bridges. From then on, for the next three decades, as his reputation increased, Donovan diversified into television commercials, movie-making, documentaries and pop promos. For his video of Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love with its scarlet-lipped mini-skirted 'guitarists', he was nominated in 1989 as one of Vanity Fair's 'Men of the Decade. In time he became a Visiting Professor, a photographer of Royalty, and by the nineties a revered figure of British photography. This is the first retrospective of Terence Donovan's work and features the best of these photographs, some well-known, some not so and many previously unpub-lished. Compiled by his wife Diana Donovan and David Hillman, it is an important contribution to the history of twentieth-century photography and a fitting tribute to the eye of Terence Donovan, a remarkable and unique talent.
